It is that time of year – letters from the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) start arriving. Please know that Chadron High School has not nominated your son or daughter, because this organization is for-profit. We support the National Honor Society (NHS) which has a chapter at Chadron High School and doesn’t require such fees; it is non-profit. National Honor Society (NHS) is respected and honored by colleges and universities.
Here is some basic information: The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) is a for-profit national organization established in 2002 and claims 500,000 members. Students pay an individual fee of $60 to join. NSHSS is operated from a corporate office in Atlanta, Georgia and doesn’t have local chapters.
These recognitions, often referred to as Vanity Awards, should be checked out thoroughly before a payment is made to an organization. You are paying for the title on a resume, a certificate, and a name in a book, which you may then also purchase.
The National Society of High School Scholars lists membership services on its website, but these services are available to anyone, without paying a fee. All students can easily access college and scholarship information through free online search engines such as those listed on our website under the Post-Secondary tab and Scholarships tab. EducationQuest’s free services can do what NSHHS offers and more!
